The open floor plan makes it easy to visit while in the kitchen, dining and living room areas, all with spectacular water views. Completing the relaxing ambiance is the circular wood burning fireplace.

The master suite, furnished with a queen size bed, peers out to the water and has a private, adjoining master bath. The second bedroom is also furnished with a queen bed. This home is also equipped with a full size sleeper sofa in the sitting area.

Within walking distance to Snug Harbor Resort, this can be your home base for your island adventure!

***PLEASE NOTE: The Madrona House has a television with a DVD player but NO satellite or cable service AT ALL! There is also no internet or Wi-Fi at this property.

  The on-the-water location adds everything to an island visit. Two large, comfy window seats induce long spells of watching the water and surrounding wildlife. The private road in a lovely neighborhood made walking our dog a pleasure, and I felt safe.   After much anticipation, our arrival at the Madrona House did not disappoint. We stepped from the car to the sounds of the ocean crashing against the shore broken only by the occasional seaplane or fishing boat cruising by the house. The quiet calm was blissful. Every morning, Fred, the resident seal pup would surface to greet us and seemed to enjoy our company. Although we were not as lucky as the previous guests who got a surprise visit from the J-pod at dawn, the J-pod nevertheless dazzled us from the American Camp beach. Lime Kiln Point State Park lived up to its potential when two Humpback whales, mother and calf, cruised by with a finale tail slap before disappearing back into the sea. We will definitely be back!

  The Mardorna House was a great spot for our little Missoula group to explore San Juan Island and all it has to offer. We arrived on Sunday afternoon, in time to watch 2 pods of Orca whales travel up the Haro Strait! The view is amazing - from sunrise to sunrise! The house met all of our needs, giving us a great place to base our visit to San Juan. The Madrona house provides easy access to Lime Kiln State Park and the National Park sites, restaurants and shopping in Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor, and the many interesting local spots all over the island. The property description is spot on - the house is a little dated, but well kept. You would need to keep your eye on your small kids or dogs as the property drops into the ocean quickly. The view, from every room on the west side of the house, is amazing!

  This house is definitely dated, however, the stunning views more than make up for it. The house is easy to get to. A short 10 minute drive from Friday Harbor. The floor plan is very open and spacious. Not sure why none of the windows had screens. We opened the windows when we returned to the house after being out for the day but closed them at night for fear of bugs (and bats?). There is a nice deck with a baby gate provided. I wouldn’t allow small children off the deck because there is no protection from a steep cliff to the water. That being said, no fence allows for the great view!

  Words cannot describe the beauty and serenity of this property. The view was absolutely breathtaking from the entire back of the property. We saw sea lions and seals, and an eagle plucked a fish out of the water right before our eyes. Clean is important to me, and the house was very clean and well stocked. I read previous reviews about the front walkway being steep. It was somewhat steep, but nothing an active mature adult couldn't handle. It was a nice change not having cable TV or internet. We were able to get phone service at this location. This was a couples weekend, but we can't wait to bring our family back next time. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of paradise!

  We totally enjoyed our stay at the Madrona House. It is the perfect location to enjoy the whales, seals, otters, kayakers, boats and beautiful sunsets. Probably my only negative comment is that the drive way and the walk way to the house is a bit steep and tricky. An older person might have trouble with parking and walking down the steep, rocky path to the house. We had no problems, but could see how one could. The house was very comfortable. The master bed was incredible...slept great. My only suggestion would be to replace some skillets...all the tephlon coating is breaking away. I realize this is a rental, but I wouldn't use them in my home. I must say we had a lovely time and will plan to return hopefully next year.

  We had a PERFECT family vacation at Madrona House this summer. The view was spectacular, the house was great and we sincerely appreciate being able to bring our tiny dog.
  Aside from seeing orcas from the deck (which was incredible),I really appreciated how it truly felt like a private residence. The books,games,DVDs & decor made it feel like we were sharing someone's beloved home, not just a vacation rental.
  My only minor suggestions would be:
  ~Add a couple more fans for guests to use. It does heat up on summer evenings.
  ~Blinds on the sitting room windows & the doors to the patio.(There were only a couple hours of the evening we closed the blinds because the sun is so intense, especially as it reflects off the water.)
  ~Screens on the windows. We left the windows open the entire visit. I thought the bugs would be worse, but we did have a few unwanted flying pests.
  All of these things are minor and we'll definitely be back for another visit next summer.

  We loved the Madrona House. It felt like home as soon as we walked in the door. But home with an amazing view! We saw a pod of orcas the first night and a couple of young ones a couple of days later. We also saw seals and dolphins. The layout is elegant and comfortable with great places to sit or lie and read, nap and look at the view. Perfect for a relaxing vacation. We did get out and explore the island, but it was tough to leave and we were always happy to get "home". We cooked wonderful meals in the well stocked kitchen. We stay in vacation rental frequently and this was one of our favorites!

  We had a very good week in this house, the view is beautiful, the area is nice and quiet, the furniture is comfortable. We saw orcas and a humpback whale right from the deck.
  We missed bug screens because the weather was warm and we had doors and windows open. We would have liked a patio umbrella on the deck because it was sometimes too hot even though it was only April. We will certainly consider coming back to this rental.

  We have stayed at Madrona House many times and love the place. We love biking on SJI and the view Haro Strait. However, the beds and bedding need renewing. One fitted sheet had a ripped corner and the pull out bed and the second bedroom beds are very uncomfortable. There were stains on the bedcover for the master bedroom bed. The outdoor chairs are old and there are only 2 of them. We saw a mouse in the kitchen and there was a leak under the kitchen sink. One of the boards on the deck is sagging. And, there was only one coffee filter when we arrived, no decent frying pan and no small plates. Sorry to be so picky about all these little things. It's a wonderful house and location, but it does feel neglected.

  Our family of four (parents, two older teens) stayed at Madrona House from Sunday to Thursday (arriving after a family wedding on Orcas Island). It was the perfect retreat for our family to unwind after much celebration and excitement at a family gathering. The house is spacious and has a perfect open floor plan for the living, dining, kitchen and tv room, is very nicely decorated (some nice modernist and funky touches), was clean and easily accommodated a family of four (two bathrooms, wonderful master suite facing water). West side location is perfect -- feels private and away from hustle and bustle of Friday Harbor -- but an easy 20 minute drive back in if you want to do the shops, grocery store etc. Incredible water views from west side of home -- we saw whales twice -- once while at the house, and another while kayaking in the same area. Loved the proximity to Roche Harbor and Snug Harbor. Barbecued dinner twice and felt very at home staying in and relaxing. Only hiccup was a coffee pot that didn't work that well so on last day I gave up and drove to Snug Harbor for delicious coffee! We hiked in the American Camp; took a 3-hour Kayak Tour with Crystal Seas; and ate dinner twice at Madrona Bar & Grill in Roche Harbor (nice service, yummy fish tacos!); lunch at Lime Cafe at Roche Harbor (good; loved the clam chowder); and best lunch ever in Friday Harbor on day we arrived at The Doctor's Office -- delicious salad and kids raved about sandwiches. If you are lucky enough to get the porch you have direct view of ferries coming in. Also went to the Lavender Farm -- fun and beautiful but not an all day adventure. All in all a special place to relax and enjoy San Juan Island! (PS: only reason I gave 4 stars for "property's general condition" was because of coffee pot and I think they could add a club chair of some sort next to LR couch for reading, and I think the mattresses could be updated. Oh yea -- and they need a measuring cup!)

  We loved our stay at the Madrona house this October. We were about a week too late to see the Orca migration, but this house must be the perfect place since we saw a ton of fishing boats from the windows. Other reviews are accurate about the front walkway - a bit dicey, especially when wet or at night, but definitely doable. Our only wishes were that the fireplace were in a better spot in the house (it was awkwardly in the middle of the room, neither close to view from the couch nor from the kitchen) and that there were blinds or window shades on the door, which was all glass. Minor tweaks on a very relaxing, peaceful house. We will definitely be back!

  Our stay was like a dream. Beautiful home, views of water, every kind of boat there is, wildlife - owls, robins, deer, fox, harbor seals and Orcas - fantastic! We had to force ourselves to leave the property to explore a little. We used the fireplace twice-after an evening kayak trip and an evening whale watch trip. Warmed us right up.   The view is million dollar. Saw a pod of orca's swimming by followed by the flotilla of shadowing boats. Deer came by the back of the house each morning. Fantastic! Only negative was that the outside trash had been emptied before we got there. Otherwise, the review would have been 5 stars all the way.

  Just back from 4 nights at the Madrona House on San Juan Is. & it was a wonderful, relaxing stay with our daughter & her husband. Loved the sound of the lapping water, the crunching of madrona leaves each morning signaling the visit from deer (mom & 2 fawns), soaking up the sun on the deck in the afternoons as we watched the activity on Haro Straight. Clean, wonderful windows, nice kitchen, mattress in extra room a lttle too soft. Very relaxing place!

  Just a safety point-the walkway down became slippery when wet-we moved to the grass to walk down. We did miss watching the late night news as the house does not have cable.

  We had a wonderful view of the ocean, and even had a whale come up and great us upon our arrival. The home is very comfortable. Our only complaints were that the grill did not work and the bottom of the oven panel kept falling off. Not a major problem, and with a couple of small pieces, that could be easily fixed. I would hate to see it get permanently broken, causing the owner more cost. Other than that, we loved it. Very spacious. Sleeping 6 may be difficult, unless you like the sofa bed. I would recommend this home to anyone. Very much enjoyed it.

  House looks like it has been extensively gone over within last few years and is great. The quietest place I have ever stayed in my life!
